mistDEAL Escrow System: How Your Money Is Protected, Step by Step
What happens between the moment you pay and the moment the seller gets the money? We walk through the four stages of mistDEAL escrow, the dispute process and what falls outside its cover.

The mistDEAL escrow system sends your payment to the platform's vault, not to the seller. The money waits there until the item is delivered and you inspect and approve it, or until the category's protection window runs out. If something goes wrong you open a dispute, the funds are frozen and the team decides on a refund or payout based on the records.
The biggest fear in buying digital goods is paying and getting nothing back. Escrow is designed to remove that fear by placing a neutral layer between the payment and the seller receiving the money. We explained the general concept in what is escrow; here we cover exactly how it works on mistDEAL.
How escrow works in 4 steps
- Order and payment — You pay in crypto. Once the payment confirms on-chain, the order becomes “paid” and the amount moves into the vault. The seller cannot spend or withdraw it at this stage.
- Delivery — Auto-delivery listings deliver instantly; manual listings deliver within the time the seller committed to in the listing.
- Inspection and approval — From delivery, you have a protection window that varies by category. During it you either click “Received, I approve” or open a dispute.
- Payout to the seller — After approval, a short security hold and any warranty period stated in the listing must pass; then the amount, minus commission, moves to the seller's withdrawable balance.
If you take no action within the protection window, the order is approved automatically. So checking the delivery promptly is the first condition for getting full value from escrow. Current protection windows per category are listed on the escrow system page.
What to do right after delivery
The protection window exists so you can actually test the item. As soon as the delivery details appear on your order page, log in and compare each feature against the listing: follower or subscriber count, spend limit, monetisation status or licence type. If you see a material mismatch, message the seller in the order chat before approving.
For account products, change the password, recovery email, phone number and two-factor settings to your own immediately after delivery. The buyer protection policy explicitly asks for this; buyers who skip it weaken any later claim that the account became inaccessible. We cover the full handover in our guide on taking over a purchased account safely.
If everything checks out there's no need to rush, but remember the system approves on your behalf when time runs out. Approving once you're done also means the seller is paid on time, which keeps the marketplace healthy for everyone.
At payment: why doesn't the money go to the seller?
In a classic direct-payment model, the money belongs to the seller the moment you send it; if nothing arrives, all you have is a chat history. On mistDEAL, the payment is locked in the seller's “pending balance”. The seller can see it, so they know the buyer has really paid, but they cannot touch it.
That balance protects both sides. The buyer knows money won't move without delivery. The seller delivers with confidence because payment is confirmed. The irreversibility of crypto stops being a drawback, because in the cases where money should come back it never reached the seller in the first place.
Payment options are part of the flow too: USDT (TRC20, BEP20, ERC20, Arbitrum), USDC, BTC, ETH, LTC, TRX and BNB are supported. If you topped up your balance in advance, the order goes into escrow instantly with no wait for network confirmations.
What if the delivery deadline is missed?
On manual-delivery listings the seller must deliver within the time stated in the listing. If the deadline passes, the buyer can cancel the order for a full refund. There are consequences on the seller side as well: a listing whose order wasn't delivered on time is hidden automatically, and if it keeps happening, all of the seller's listings are taken down for a while.
This rule removes the “I've got the money, no hurry” attitude. On auto-delivery listings, the details land on your order page as soon as the payment confirms. Which model a listing uses is shown clearly on the listing page, so checking the delivery type and time before you buy is a good habit.
How does a dispute work?
If the delivered details don't work or the item doesn't match the listing, open a dispute from the order page before the protection window ends. The moment a dispute is opened, the amount in the vault is frozen; it neither goes to the seller nor gets auto-approved.
Both parties share explanations and evidence in the order chat: error messages, screenshot links, dates and times. The seller is generally expected to respond within 24 hours. The mistDEAL team reviews the records and issues one of three decisions: full refund to the buyer, payout to the seller, or a partial refund. The decision is published on the order page with its reasoning.
Refunds go to the buyer's mistDEAL balance and can be used immediately. Requests to withdraw a balance back out as crypto are handled via live support.
Listings with a warranty: protection after approval
Some sellers commit to an extra warranty period in their listing, such as a “72-hour closure warranty”. On such a listing, even if you approve the order, the seller's revenue stays in the vault until the warranty expires. If a covered problem appears during that time through no fault of yours, you can open a dispute.
A warranty is only as good as what the listing says. Without a warranty, protection ends the moment you approve; with one, it continues through the warranty period. That difference matters most for items where problems may surface days after delivery. Reading what the warranty covers before buying prevents “that's not what I meant” arguments later.
What escrow covers and what it doesn't
| Situation | Escrow protection |
|---|---|
| Seller didn't deliver on time | Covered — order cancelled, full refund |
| Delivered details don't work and weren't fixed | Covered — reviewed through a dispute |
| Item materially differs from the listing | Covered — refund or partial refund |
| Account recovered by the seller | Covered — refund; seller's account closed |
| Order approved, no warranty | Not covered |
| Third-party platform sanctions caused by the buyer's use | Not covered |
| Expected performance, reach or income didn't materialise | Not covered |
| Payment made off-platform | Not covered |
The bottom half of the table matters as much as the top. Using a purchased account in line with the relevant platform's rules (ad network, social network, video platform) is your responsibility. Some platforms restrict account transfers in their terms of service; assessing that risk is up to the buyer, and suspensions that result are outside escrow cover.
Peer-to-peer escrow for deals outside listings
Escrow isn't limited to listings on the site. For a deal you've agreed with someone on your own terms, you can still use mistDEAL as the middleman. The flow is simple: one party creates the deal with a title, terms, amount and approval window; the system generates a private invite link. The other party opens it and accepts the terms, the buyer funds the vault, the seller delivers, and the amount goes to the seller when the buyer approves.
Who pays the commission (buyer, seller or split) is chosen when the deal is created, and commission is charged only if the deal completes successfully. In a dispute, funds are frozen and the team decides based on the evidence. Making sure the subject of the deal is lawful and not on the prohibited items list is the parties' responsibility.
