Off-Platform Payment Scams: Why You Should Never Leave the Marketplace

Almost every digital goods scam has one thing in common: moving the deal off the protected platform. Here are the most common traps and how to stay safe.

Cover warning against off-platform payment scams and showing an escrow-protected payment

An off-platform payment scam is when a seller lures you to Telegram, WhatsApp or a direct transfer with a discount or a convenience pitch, so the payment lands outside escrow protection. Once money leaves the platform, refunds, disputes and records stop applying. The simplest rule: messages and payment always stay on the order page.

The most common way to get scammed when buying digital goods is surprisingly low-tech. No clever hacking required; the scammer just needs to move the deal outside the protection. Below are the traps you'll run into most often and how to defend against each one.

Why paying off-platform is so risky

On an escrow marketplace, money never goes straight to the seller. The payment enters the vault and waits there until the product is delivered and you confirm, or the protection window runs out. If something goes wrong you open a dispute, the amount is frozen and the decision is based on the order chat and delivery records.

Off-platform, none of that exists. Crypto transfers and direct bank payments can't be reversed. Because the conversation lives in another app, the platform has no record to review. When the seller changes their number or deletes their username, all you're left with is screenshots.

That's why mistDEAL's terms of use are explicit: users may not move the order process off the platform, and may not request or accept payment outside it. Off-platform transactions are not covered by mistDEAL protection. We explain how escrow protects you in how mistDEAL escrow protects you.

In short: Escrow only protects the money that passes through it. The moment payment leaves the platform, even the best protection system can do nothing for you.

The "let's do it cheaper outside" trap

The classic scenario starts in the order chat or on the listing page: "Let's skip the fee, I'll give you a discount, message me on Telegram." It sounds tempting; same product, lower price.

In reality, the discount is the price of giving up your protection. An honest seller has little reason to risk their account, rating and history to dodge a fee, especially since sellers are prohibited by the rules from offering buyers off-platform contact, payment or delivery. A seller who makes that offer has already shown they're willing to break the rules.

On top of that, for listing sales on mistDEAL the commission comes out of the seller's earnings and only applies when a sale completes successfully. So the "savings" in a cheaper-outside offer aren't really for you; they're the seller's tool for talking you into an unprotected deal.

The trap comes in variations. A seller may hide a Telegram handle in the listing or their username, claim "the chat is broken, write me here", or complete a small first order on the platform to build trust and then suggest moving the big one outside. They all share one goal: getting the money out of escrow.

Fake support accounts and code requests

The second common play is someone posing as staff or the "support team". They usually message you privately, claim there's a problem and that your account or order will be suspended, then ask for your password, a verification code, backup codes or wallet details.

The rule is simple: the mistDEAL team will never ask for your password or two-factor code. Support is provided through the live chat on the site and the official @mistnetwork channel on Telegram. If someone outside those channels messages you claiming to be support, ignore them and report it to live support.

These attempts are simply phishing adapted to digital goods marketplaces. The goal is always the same: to get into your account, or wherever your money sits, in your place.

Turn on two-factor authentication for your mistDEAL account and use a unique password, so a leaked password alone isn't enough. You're responsible for your account's security.

Pressure tactics and rushed deals

Lines like "last hour", "pay now or I'll sell it to someone else" or "this price is only good right now" push you to act without thinking. Pressure is a scammer's strongest tool, because a rushed buyer skips the checklist, doesn't read the listing and doesn't double-check the network and amount on the payment screen.

A real deal can survive a few minutes of thought. Be extra careful with sellers who rush you; if you're unsure, ask live support before buying.

Pressure doesn't always come from sellers. Sometimes a fake "buyer" messages a seller: "I've paid, here's a screenshot, send the details now." If you sell, verify payment only from the order status on the order page and share nothing until the order shows as paid. By the rules, delivery details are given only through the delivery field on the order page.

Warning: A price far below market, urgent language and an offer to "pay outside" — if all three show up together, stop. That combination is a very strong sign of a scam.

A more advanced method is a page that imitates the real payment screen. The seller or "support" sends you a link; the page looks familiar, but the domain is different and your money goes straight to the scammer's wallet.

On mistDEAL, payment always starts from the button on the order page, which takes you to the secure payment screen. Don't click a "payment link" sent in a chat or another app. Send the exact amount shown, only over the network shown; payments sent to the wrong network or address may not be recoverable. We collected the crypto-specific checks in what to watch when paying with crypto.

Your browser's address bar is your most reliable check. One swapped letter, an extra hyphen or an unfamiliar extension in the domain means the page is fake. Reach the site by typing the address or from a bookmark, never via a link in an email, chat or ad.

On-platform vs off-platform: side by side

The difference between buying the same product two different ways is clear in this table:

The golden rules for staying safe

  1. Keep messages and payment on the order page — Never discuss payment over Telegram, WhatsApp or email.
  2. Never share passwords, codes or wallet details — Not with the seller, not with anyone claiming to be "support".
  3. Trust the order page, not links — Start payment only from the button on the order page.
  4. Check the product before confirming — Confirmed orders aren't refunded outside warranty coverage.
  5. Report suspicious offers — Use the Report button on the listing page or message live support.

If you got a suspicious offer but haven't paid yet, simply stop. Reporting the seller keeps others from falling into the same trap. Where fraud or a rule violation is suspected, mistDEAL can freeze escrowed amounts until the review is complete.

What to do if you think you've been scammed

If you paid through the order page and the product didn't arrive or doesn't work, open a dispute before the protection window ends. The amount is frozen immediately; the team reviews the order chat and delivery records and decides on a full refund, payment to the seller or a partial refund. Refunds go to your mistDEAL balance and are usable right away.

If you paid off-platform, it's a different story: that money never entered escrow, so there's nothing the platform can act on. Still, save the other party's username, the messages and transaction IDs without delay, report it to live support and contact the authorities if needed. If the other party is a registered user, action can be taken on their account under the rules.

Tip: When an offer makes you think "why not?", also ask "if something goes wrong, who gives my money back?" If the answer is "nobody", the deal is off-platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I agree with a seller on Telegram and pay there?
No. Conversations and payments outside the platform aren't covered by mistDEAL protection and are the most common route for scams. Keep all communication in the order chat.
I paid outside the platform. Can I get my money back?
Off-platform payments never entered escrow, so mistDEAL can't act on those funds. Still report the other party to live support; if they're a registered user, action can be taken on their account.
Will mistDEAL support ever ask me for a code?
No. The mistDEAL team never asks for your password or two-factor code. Support is only provided via the on-site live chat and the @mistnetwork channel on Telegram.
How can I spot a fake payment link?
Be suspicious of any payment link sent in a chat or another app. On mistDEAL, payment only starts from the button on the order page; always check the domain.
What should I do if a seller suggests leaving the platform?
Decline and report it using the Report button on the listing page or via live support. Sellers are prohibited from offering off-platform contact, payment or delivery.
