A Facebook ad account restricted notice usually follows a breach of Meta's Advertising Standards, suspicious payment or login activity, or incomplete verification. The fix is to read the reason in Account Quality, correct it and use only Meta's official review route. Lasting stability comes from running the account within the rules from the start.

Facebook and Instagram ads run on the same ad system, so the rules and the restriction process are identical for both. Below you will find the most common causes of restrictions, the habits that keep an account healthy, and the steps to follow when something goes wrong.

Why do Facebook ad accounts get restricted?

Meta shows the reason for a restriction in the Account Quality section of your Business Manager (business portfolio). These are the causes you will see most often:

CauseExampleFirst step
Advertising Standards violationProhibited product, exaggerated health claim, misleading copyReview rejected ads and remove non-compliant ones
Repeated rejectionsResubmitting the same problem ad with small tweaksFix the root cause instead of piling up rejections
Payment problemsFailed payments, someone else's cardAdd your own valid payment method and clear the balance
Security concernsUnusual logins, a compromised profileChange the password and turn on two-factor authentication
Missing verificationIdentity or business verification left unfinishedComplete verification with real details

The ad account, the business portfolio it sits in and the personal profile that manages it are all connected. A serious issue with one of them can affect the others, so think of account health as the whole structure, not a single ad account.

Getting to know Meta's Advertising Standards

Meta's Advertising Standards define what can never be promoted and what is allowed only under extra conditions. Every ad is reviewed against them before it runs, and the review covers not just the text but the image, video, targeting and landing page.

  • Prohibited content: things that can never be advertised, such as illegal products, deceptive practices or fake documents.
  • Restricted content: categories like alcohol, online gambling and some health and financial products, which can run only under specific conditions and often with prior permission.
  • Special ad categories: ads about credit, employment, housing, and social issues, elections or politics, which may come with targeting limits and extra authorisation.
  • Personal attributes: ad copy must not imply things about a user's health, finances or other personal characteristics.
Tip: When an ad is rejected, do not resubmit it again and again with tiny edits. Read the rejection reason and actually fix it. Accumulated rejections are the most common starting point for an account-level restriction.

Business verification and account security

Verifying your business portfolio with real company details increases trust and unlocks some features. The details you use should match your business name, address, phone number and website.

Security matters just as much as verification. Everyone who manages ads should have two-factor authentication on their personal profile. Instead of handing out passwords, assign team members only the roles they need through the business portfolio, and remove access as soon as an employee or agency leaves. A single compromised profile can put every connected ad asset at risk.

Your payment method is part of the trust picture as well. Add a valid payment method registered in your own name and keep billing details consistent with your business information. Resolve failed payments quickly, because an unpaid balance can stop your ads and lead to a restriction. Using someone else's card or changing payment methods unnecessarily often can trigger a suspicious payment review, so keep billing simple and transparent.

Page reputation and customer feedback

The reputation of the Page you advertise from directly affects delivery. Meta collects feedback from people who bought something through your ads; slow shipping, products that differ from what was shown, or unreachable customer service all drag that feedback down.

  • Keep the product, price and delivery time in your ads realistic.
  • Reply to comments and messages politely and within a reasonable time.
  • State refund and delivery terms clearly on the landing page.

Low feedback can raise your ad costs and, in serious cases, restrict your ability to advertise. A good product and honest communication are the only ways to protect it.

The landing page is part of that reputation too. If the offer from the ad is missing on the page, the price is different or the page loads slowly, both rejection and negative feedback become more likely. Consistency between ad and page is one of the core things Meta looks at.

Pixel, data and privacy

When you set up the pixel or a server-side connection for conversion tracking, you must respect user privacy. Your site should have a clear notice about cookies and data processing, and you should collect whatever consent local law requires.

Do not send sensitive information, such as health data, ID numbers or financial details, to Meta. Collecting data without consent or uploading customer lists of unclear origin is a serious legal and platform risk. Use only data from customers who have opted in, and keep a record of that consent.

Steady growth on a new ad account

On a new ad account, starting with a modest budget and scaling gradually based on results keeps the algorithm's learning phase healthy and avoids unexpected billing problems. Sudden, large spend spikes on an account with a short payment history can prompt extra review.

This is not a trick for fooling a system; it is simply sound campaign management. Rather than deleting and rebuilding campaigns constantly, let the learning phase finish and make measured changes. Results usually improve too.

If your account is restricted: requesting a review in Account Quality

First work out exactly what has been restricted, because the fix depends on it:

  • Ad rejection: only one ad does not run. Edit it or request a review of that ad.
  • Ad account restriction: every ad in that account stops. Request a review in Account Quality.
  • Profile restriction: your personal profile loses the ability to manage ads, which affects every ad account it can access.
  • Business portfolio restriction: every asset in the portfolio is affected, usually because of verification or a serious violation.

Once you know the level of the restriction, follow these steps:

  1. Open Account Quality — In Business Suite or your business portfolio, find the restricted asset and the stated reason.
  2. Compare the reason with the standards — Check your recent ads, landing pages and billing details against the relevant standard, one by one.
  3. Fix the problem — Remove non-compliant ads, resolve the payment issue and complete any requested verification.
  4. Request a review — If you believe the decision is wrong, request a review from the same screen and briefly explain what you corrected.
  5. Wait and keep records — Note the ad account and business IDs, dates and messages; it makes any contact with support much easier.
Warning: Continuing to advertise through new profiles, accounts opened with fake details or other business portfolios to get around a restriction clearly breaks Meta's rules and can get every connected asset shut down. The only sustainable path is the official review process.

Taken-over accounts, Meta's terms and mistDEAL

Meta's Terms of Service do not allow you to give others access to your personal account or transfer it without Meta's permission. The legitimate way to share ad assets is through partner access and role assignments in a business portfolio. Use those tools when you work with an agency or when your company structure changes.

If you are considering buying an ad account or business portfolio access on a marketplace, checking whether that is allowed under the platform's terms, and using the account within the rules, is entirely the buyer's responsibility. We compare account structures in our ad account types guide and cover what to check when buying in 10 things to check before buying an account.

On mistDEAL, your payment waits in the escrow system. After delivery you check the account within the protection window and confirm it if it matches the listing. If it materially differs from the description, you can open a dispute. Platform sanctions caused by your own use, ad content, payment method or a policy violation, however, are not grounds for a refund. Ad accounts opened with stolen payment methods or verified with fake identities are prohibited on the platform.

Bottom line: A healthy Meta ad account rests on following the Advertising Standards, verifying with real details, strong account security and honest communication with customers. If a restriction arrives, request a review in Account Quality. For the Google side, see our Google Ads guide. Questions? Frequently asked questions

Why do Facebook ad accounts get restricted?
The most common causes are Advertising Standards violations, repeatedly rejected ads, payment problems, security concerns and missing verification. The reason is shown in the Account Quality section of your business portfolio.
How do I get a restricted Meta ad account back?
Read the reason in Account Quality and fix the issue first. If you believe the decision is wrong, request a review from the same screen. The outcome is up to Meta; there is no guaranteed route.
Is an Instagram ad account restriction different from Facebook?
No. Instagram ads use Meta's ad system and the same Advertising Standards, and restrictions and reviews are handled in the same Account Quality screen.
Can I open a new ad account after a restriction?
Using new profiles, fake details or other business portfolios to get around a restriction breaks Meta's rules and can get connected assets closed too. The right path is the official review process.
Can a Meta ad account be transferred?
Meta's terms forbid transferring a personal account without permission. The legitimate way to share ad assets is partner access and role assignments in a business portfolio. Checking the current terms before any transfer is the user's responsibility.
