Google Ads Account Suspended? How to Keep Your Account Healthy and Policy-Compliant

The lasting fix for a Google Ads suspension is compliance, not workarounds. We cover the most common causes, the warning and strike process and the official appeal steps.

A Google Ads account suspended notice usually follows a serious or repeated policy violation, suspicious payment activity or incomplete verification. The lasting fix is never a workaround: read the reason in the notice, correct the problem, use the official appeal route, and run the account in line with Google's policies from day one.

This guide covers the most common suspension reasons, how Google's warning and strike process works, the right way to appeal, and the habits that keep an account healthy for years. Whether you manage your own account, a client's, or one you have taken over, the core rules are the same.

Why do Google Ads accounts get suspended?

Google names the policy involved in the suspension notice. Reading it carefully is the first and most important step. These are the reasons you will meet most often:

ReasonWhat it meansFirst step
Circumventing systemsMisleading review, using a new account to dodge enforcement, cloakingStop the practice entirely; show everyone the same landing page
MisrepresentationMissing contact details, hidden fees, claims that are not trueMake business details and offer terms clear on the site
Unacceptable business practicesA business model built to deceive users, or impersonationReview the business model and messaging
Suspicious payment activityInconsistent payment details or suspected unauthorised useUse your own valid payment details and finish verification
Unpaid balanceAd spend that could not be collectedClear the balance and update the payment method

The policy names in the table are Google's own categories. Always treat the official help pages as the current, binding text.

Account security is another cause people overlook. If someone takes over a Google account and launches unauthorised campaigns, you lose money and the account may be paused for security reasons. A strong password, two-step verification and user access granted only to the people who need it prevent a lot of trouble.

Getting to know Google Ads policies

The Google Ads policies fall into four groups: prohibited content, prohibited practices, restricted content and features, and editorial and technical requirements. Knowing which group your product falls into before you launch prevents most problems.

  • Prohibited content: things that cannot be advertised at all, such as counterfeit goods, dangerous products or content that enables dishonest behaviour.
  • Prohibited practices: abusing the ad network, irresponsible data collection, misrepresentation. Circumventing systems belongs here.
  • Restricted content: areas like healthcare, financial services, gambling and alcohol, which often need extra certification or country-level permission.
  • Editorial and technical: quality rules on spelling, capitalisation and symbols, and a working destination URL.
Tip: If you are in a restricted industry, apply for the required certification or documentation before you launch. Trying to run ads before approval piles up disapprovals and warnings fast.

Landing pages and honest claims

Google judges an ad together with the page it sends people to. Your landing page has to be real, working and consistent with the ad. The price, offer and conditions in the ad should appear the same way on the page.

  • Show contact details, a privacy policy, and refund and delivery terms clearly.
  • Avoid claims you cannot prove, such as "guaranteed income" or "a definite cure".
  • Never show reviewers different content from what visitors see; that is a serious circumventing systems violation.
  • The page should load fast, display well on mobile and never redirect users somewhere they did not expect.

Variations that genuinely help users, such as language or regional versions, are fine. What matters is that the content stays essentially the same and can be reviewed.

Billing and advertiser verification

Set up billing with your own valid details. Someone else's card, a mismatched billing address or frequently changing payment methods can trigger a suspicious payment review. A steady, clean payment history builds trust over time.

Google asks advertisers to verify who they are and which business they advertise for. When a verification request arrives, complete it within the deadline with real, consistent information. Missing the deadline can stop your ads from serving.

Steady budgeting matters too. Start campaigns on a reasonable budget and scale gradually based on results; it keeps the learning phase healthy and avoids billing surprises. Sudden, unexplained spend spikes can prompt extra review, especially on accounts with a short payment history.

How do warnings and strikes work?

For violations that are not egregious, Google generally uses a stepped process. It sends a warning first; if the same policy is violated again, timed temporary suspensions follow, and continued violations can lead to permanent suspension. The details are on the what happens if you violate our policies page.

For egregious violations such as circumventing systems, unauthorised account access or unacceptable business practices, there is no warning stage: the account can be suspended immediately. Account health is therefore about how the account is used, not just about ad copy.

Keep two ideas apart here. A single disapproved ad simply does not run, and fixing the copy usually solves it. A suspended account means every ad in it stops. Ignoring disapprovals and resubmitting similar ads again and again can turn a small issue into an account-level sanction.

If your account is suspended: how to appeal properly

  1. Read the notice — Note which policy is cited in the in-account and email suspension notice.
  2. Study the policy — Read the official policy text and check your ads, keywords and landing pages against it.
  3. Actually fix the problem — Remove non-compliant ads, add missing information to the site, resolve the payment or verification issue.
  4. Use the official appeal form — Appeal from the link inside the account, explaining briefly and clearly what you corrected.
  5. Wait for the result — Sending the same appeal repeatedly does not speed things up. If more information is requested, answer fully.

What does a good appeal look like?

An appeal is a clear status report, not a long defence. State which policy was cited, then list what you changed: which ads you removed, which page on the site you updated, what information you added. Have business documents and certifications ready if you hold any.

Accusatory or emotional language does not help; reviewers care about evidence. An appeal for a problem that was not really fixed gets rejected and makes later appeals harder, so check the whole account once more before you submit.

Warning: Opening a new account, or switching to another one, to replace a suspended account clearly violates Google's circumventing systems policy and can get linked accounts suspended too. The only sustainable path is to fix the issue and complete the official appeal.

Responsibility with taken-over or purchased accounts

When you take over a client's account or buy an ad account on a marketplace, its history comes with it. Start by checking warnings in the policy manager, the payment history and who has access. Remove users who do not need access and set up your own valid billing and business details.

Also keep in mind that platform terms treat account transfers differently, and some platforms forbid transfer or sale or allow it only with permission. Reading the Google Ads terms and policies and using the account accordingly is entirely the buyer's responsibility. On mistDEAL, the payment waits in escrow. After delivery you check the account within the category's protection window and confirm it if it matches the description. If it materially differs from the listing, you can open a dispute. Platform sanctions caused by your own use, ad content or a policy violation are not covered by refunds. Details are on the escrow system page.

Checklist for a healthy Google Ads account

  • Check your product's policy category before every new campaign.
  • Make the landing page show the same offer and terms as the ad.
  • Grant access with user roles, never by sharing passwords, and turn on two-step verification.
  • Keep billing and verification details current and genuinely yours.
  • Review policy manager warnings weekly and do not let disapproved ads pile up.
  • If something goes wrong, use only the official appeal channels.
Bottom line: What protects the value of a Google Ads account is using it within the platform's rules. Fixing the problem and appealing always lasts longer than trying to get around the rules. Frequently asked questions

Why do Google Ads accounts get suspended?
The most common reasons are circumventing systems, misrepresentation, unacceptable business practices, suspicious payment activity and unpaid balances. The suspension notice names the policy involved.
Can a suspended Google Ads account be reinstated?
If the decision was a mistake or you have genuinely fixed the issue, you can request a review through the official appeal form inside the account. If the appeal succeeds, the account is reactivated; the outcome is up to Google.
My account was suspended. Can I just open a new one?
No. Opening or using another account to replace a suspended one violates the circumventing systems policy and can get linked accounts closed too. The right path is the appeal process.
How does the Google Ads warning and strike system work?
For non-egregious violations Google sends a warning first; repeat violations of the same policy bring timed temporary suspensions, and continued violations can lead to permanent suspension. Egregious violations can trigger immediate suspension without a warning.
Can I get a refund if an ad account I bought gets closed?
On mistDEAL, if the account materially differs from the listing you can open a dispute within the protection window. Platform sanctions caused by your own use, ad content or a policy violation are not grounds for a refund.
